Program for Caregivers

Program for Caregivers

There are two pilot programs in place in Canada right now for caregivers who want to move here permanently. While they wait for permanent residency, applicants can also get temporary work permits through these pilot programs

These pilots were modified by IRCC in 2023. You now only need 12 months of qualifying work experience, as opposed to 24 months, as part of these changes.

  • Home Support Worker Pilot is open now for new applications;
  • The Home Support Worker Pilot will accept;
  • 1,650 applications in the category of gaining experience
  • 1,100 applications in the direct-to-permanent residence category

Home Support Worker (Pilot)

The IRCC is currently open to applications.

Home Childcare Provider Pilot

For the category of gaining experience, all caps have been reached. This indicates that applications for the Gaining Experience category will not be accepted after 2023. For this category, applications will not be accepted through the IRCC portal, and IRCC will return any paper applications.

Under two 5-year pilot programs, the Home Childcare Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot, eligible caregivers and their families may immigrate to Canada to obtain permanent residency. You might be able to apply for permanent residence through one of these pilot programs if you’ve been offered a job as a caregiver in Canada or if you have prior experience working as a caregiver there. The application process will vary based on your circumstances and the amount of relevant work experience you possess.

  • In 2022 IRCC switched to the 2021 version of the National Occupational Classification (NOC).
  • Home childcare provider – NOC 4411 was replaced with NOC 44100
  • Home support worker – NOC 4412 was replaced with NOC 44101

The two categories are determined by IRCC based on the following;

Gaining Experienced Category

  • You have less than a year’s worth of work experience, or you have never worked as a caregiver full-time in Canada.
  • This also applies if you are currently employed full-time as caregivers in Canada, or you have recently worked there full-time as a caregiver.

Direct to the PR Category

  • You have spent a minimum of 12 months working full-time as a caregiver in Canada during the past 36 months.
